In conjunction with the Greek Food Festival, we conduct a 26.2 mile Torch Relay Run to raise money for charity. This year, we are proud to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Southern Nevada in memory of 12 year old Michael Manteris. Michael was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia, AML. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is leading the research into AML and has already made major advancements that are resulting in human trials. The money is raised by having people who want to run a one mile leg of the run obtain pledges and by having people directly donate money to support the run.
The run will begin with a torch lighting ceremony at 2:00 pm Friday, September 14, 2018 at the Tivoli Village in Summerlin. The torch will then be carried along the selected route by the various runners who have obtained monetary pledges to help us support LLS. There will be a police escort for the entire course of the run followed by two limousines to collect runners after their run. One of the limousines can take runners back to their cars after they run their respective leg of the run should they desire.
The torch will arrive at the Festival on the grounds of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church at approximately 7:00 pm, at which time we will light the festival flame. Although we open the festival at 3:00 pm that same day, the lighting of the flame is our official opening of the Festival. We invite all runners who participate in the relay to join together in running the final leg as we bring the torch on to the festival grounds.
All participants in the run will receive a t-shirt to commemorate the event. In addition, all participants will be the guests of St. John Church for a complimentary dinner at the Festival, at any time during the Festival. If you'd like to become a runner, please call us at (702) 221-8245. A sponsorship of $200 is required for each runner.
People who wish to donate to the run, can call us at (702) 221-8245. If you'd like to donate to LLS directly, visit their site at events.lls.org/snv/teammichaelbear.
